Beware: don’t be too enthusiastic in the offline guide of Colombia Fácil. All the written prices are without the ‘000’! ’20’ means 20.000 COP.

6.000 COP = The price of one beer, the price of a Colombia Fácil Guide!

At this moment, Colombia has new and old bills in circulation. It is always a good idea to carry an assortment of 1.000, 2.000 and 5.000 bills in your pocket. Otherwise, it is likely that no change will be available and you´ll need to wait a long time for it. Imagine ordering a coco loco (= fresh coconut full of rum) on the beach and dying of thirst…

The new bills are:

100.000 COP, mainly green. With Carlos Lleras Restrepo (1908-1994), president of Colombia from 1966-1970 and at the backside wax palms of the Cocora valley.

50.000 COP, violet. With writer Gabriel Garcia Márquez (1927-2014) and Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City).

20.000 COP, dominated by orange, yellow and brown. With Alfonso López Michelsen (1913-2007), president from 1974-1978 and the typical Colombian hat (sombrero vueltiao).

10.000 COP, violet and red. With anthropologist Virginia Gutiérrez (1921-1999) and the Amazon region.

5.000 COP, dominated by brown. With José Asunción Silva (1865-1896), Colombian poet, and the páramo Andean landscape.

2.000 COP, blue. With Colombian artist Débora Arango (1907-2005) and Caño Cristales.

The old bills are:

50.000 COP, multicoloured, especially brown and blue. With the portrait of Jorge Isaacs (1837-1895), writer from the novel Maria but also socially active in many ways. 

20.000 COP, multicoloured, dominated by blue. With the astronomer Julio Garavito Armero (1865-1920).

10.000 COP, mostly red. With Policarpa Salavarireta (1795-1817) also known as La Pola and spy against the Spanish.

5000 COP, blue dominated. With José Asunción Silva (1865-1896), Colombian poet.

2000 COP, multicoloured, mostly green and red. With general Francisco de Paula Santander (1792-1840).

1000 COP, dominated by red. With politician Jorge Eliécer Gaitán (1903-1948).

Coins are:

1000 COP = Loggerhead turtles, recurrent visitor Colombian coasts.
500 COP = The glass frog, inhabitant of foothills and the foothills of the Andes.
200 COP = The scarlet macaw, tropical rain forest dweller.
100 COP = The frailejón, iconic páramo (moorland) plant Colombians.
50 COP = The spectacled bear, inhabitant of the humid Andean forest.
