PEOPLE IN COLOMBIA

Colombia has many different kinds of people… People with different skin tones and textures without mentioning the diversity of their accents. Let’s have a look at the people who have the genuine roots in this green paradise…

Arhuacos
Region = In the upper valleys of the Piedras River, San Sebastian River, Chichicua River, Ariguani River and Guatapuri River, in indigenous territory in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Mountains. Nabusimake is the capital of the Arhuaco nation which is close to Valledupar in the Cesar department.
Language = Arhuaco, Spanish
Religion = Traditional tribal religion
Related ethnic groups = Chibchan group. The Arhuaco are also known as the Aruaco, Bintucua, Bintuk, Bintukua, Ica, Ijca, Ijka, Ika and Ike people. They are descendants of the Tayrona culture.

Bora 
Region = Peruvian, Colombian and Brazilian Amazon, located between the Putumayo and Napo rivers
Language = Bora, Spanish
Religion = Christian, Animist
Related ethnic groups = Witoto, Ocaina

Embera Chami
Region = Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío, Valle del Cauca
Language = Embera-Chami
Related ethnic groups = Emberá

Kankuamos
Region = The geographic area of influence is Atánquez Kankuamo, Chemesquemena, Guatapuri and La Mina, on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, between Badillo and Guatapurí rivers in the department of Cesar.

Religion = Traditional tribal religion

Kogi
Region = A native American ethnic group that lives in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Kuna
Region = Panama, San Blas
Language = Kuna, Spanish
Religion = Traditional Kuna religion, various Christian religions including Baptist, Catholic and Latter-Day Saint (Mormon)

Misak or Guambianos
Region = An Amerindian group who lives in the department of Cauca (Silvia)
Language = Guambiano

Nasa (Páez people)
Region = Live in the southwestern highlands of Colombia, especially in Tierradentro but also Caqueta department.
Language = Spanish, Paez
Religion = Roman Catholicism, tribal religion
Related ethnic groups = Cacua or Bara Maku, Hupdu

Nukak
Region = Live between the Guaviare and Inirida rivers in the Amazon basin (San Jose del Guaviare)
Language = Spanish
Religion = Animist

Pijaos
Region = Tolima, some live in Meta, Caqueta, Guaviare
Language = The Pijao language is almost extinct. Spanish

Ticuna
Region = Live in the Peruvian, Colombian and Brazilian Amazon region
Language = Ticuna

Tukano
Region = Live in the north-western Amazon region, along the Vaupes river and surroundings. Most of them on the Colombian side.
Language = No man can have a wife who speaks the same language (would be a sign of incest). Different languages: Tukano, Wanano, Barasana, Bara Tukano, Macuna, Desana and Cubeo.

U’wa
Region = Live in departments as Santander, Boyacá, Casanare and Arauca
Language = Spanish, Uw Cuwa
Religion = Animist
Related ethnic groups = Chibchan people

Wayuu
Region = Live in Colombia and Venezuela with the highest population in the La Guajira Peninsula
Language = Spanish, Wayuu language
Religion = Traditional

Wiwa
Region = Live in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta
Language = Damana
Religion = Traditional tribal religion

Yukpa
Region = Live in the Serrania del Perija towards the border with Venezuela
